The Smoldering Giant

Posted on February 2, 2026February 2, 2026 by eatsleepwrestle

Sunday afternoon I posted a video during the Grindhouse Rumble Rumble showing 2 Tuff Tony lighting his hand on fire before decking Jake Bravado.

An hour later, I got a call from Dean Hill, the original voice of OVW and the voice of Tuesday night wrestling at Louisville Gardens.

“That image brought back a memory of Jerry Lawler. As you know, Lawler used to throw fireballs in the ring. He taught me how to do it when I was part of the anti-drug rock band for the Louisville Police, Street Heat, so I could use it in our show.

“Anyway, Lawler was wrestling Giant Gonzales at the Gardens. Giant Gonzales was from Mexico. He was over 7 feet tall and wore this body suit that made him look like a Yeti. When Lawler threw the fireball at him, it caught the fake fur on Gonzales’s chest on fire!

“Lawler threw him on the ground and rolled him around to put the fire out. He pinned the Giant and headed to the back. As soon as he did, the Giant got up and followed him, smoldering all the way. He went straight down into the locker room and right into the shower.

“Lawler went to make sure Gonzales was okay. The Giant’s English wasn’t very good, but Lawler understood the his reply. ‘Please no set me on fire again!’”

Thanks, Dean, for another great memory!
