It’s inevitable. It happens every time. You work as hard as you can on a book. You send it out into the wild. And then something happens that makes you say, “Gee, I wish I had that for the book.”
Sunday afternoon I was in the locker room prior to Grindhouse Pro Wrestling Academy’s Lethal Lottery show. Tony and Ronnie took a moment to introduce James Duncan as the promotion’s new sound man. ESW readers may recognize James’s name, as he’s the graphic designer who created covers for my books on Wahoo, Chris Candido, Scott Romer, Princess Victoria, June Byers, and Mars Bennett.
“Duncan is also a graphic designer,” said Tony. “He’s the guy who designs all our posters.”
“F–K YOU, DUNCAN!!” It was Ben Shearin, heel manager extraordinaire, who on the recent Halloween poster was Photoshopped as the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man.
It’s been almost 10 months since my year behind the scenes at Grindhouse came to an end, but there have been numerous exciting moments since. The birth of Vanessa Holiday’s baby. Ethan Heyre’s feud with Larry D. And Miss Larkan’s move to OVW. We Are Grindhouse is really just the beginning for most of the wrestlers profiled in the book. And it contains plenty of great moments:
Tag partners Brandon Wolfe and Kash Jackson being drawn to wrestle one another in last year’s Lethal Lottery.
Mercy Keller’s fiasco of a birthday party.
The first lessons and bumps taken by Cyrus Riley, Major Price, and OG Ugly.
Allie Allbright going hardcore after finding Kendo sticks under the ring.
The day Robert Katchem came in with scars shaped like a part of the human (male) anatomy.
If you want to know what it’s like to train, to pay your dues, and chase a dream in today’s indie wrestling, you need to read We Are Grindhouse. The book is marked down for the holidays, and for a very limited time, you can bundle it with Eat Sleep Wrestle Repeat for only $20.
