Some people are drawn to action figures. Some want autographs or a selfie. Me? When I see a wrestler has a book on the table, they have my attention. Especially if I’m already a fan.
I finally had the chance to see and meet Rachael Ellering at the triumphant return of Girl Fight Wrestling in New Albany. As luck would have it, Rachael had a book on her table, right next to her very cool looking Wrestling Buddies. I was reminded immediately of Jordynne Grace’s phenomenal compilations, DMs of a Female Wrestler. Rachael’s book certainly has that same spirit, but with less creepy – and yet more awkward – results.
I mean really. Did some guy actually walk up to Rachael at QUEENS of Combat and suggest the show would be better if men were wrestling on it?
Sadly, I can 100% believe it happened.
The book is short but filled with laughs. Rachael shares one unbelievable fan quip after another, accompanied by full color reaction photos and what Rachael really wanted to say in that moment. If you’re a fan of Mad Magazine’s Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions, written by the legendary Al Jaffee, you’ll get a kick out of this.
I’m happy to say the only awkwardness that came from my meeting Rachael was when she almost accidentally charged me $2000 for a $20 book. Thankfully, she caught the error before hitting the Pay button on my phone. Rachael’s gracious and funny in person, and yeah, she can go in the ring.
Just try not to embarrass yourself when you meet her, lest you end up in volume 2.
Be sure to say hello when you see Rachael at a show, and if you’re reader, grab a copy of Why Did You Say That?
